ABSTRACT

The chapter examines the production of space in the last 30 years from the point of view of globalization. The development of neoliberalism demanded its own technology of implementation, which will be here treated by the study of technical patterns. The LEED® rating system is the technical pattern explored, due to its international leading role in environmental assessment. It is claimed that LEED® implicitly favors certain design guidelines, such as mechanical control of indoor spaces, sealed envelope, figure-ground monofunctional site plan, and large scale. It is then explained how those guidelines manifest themselves in corporate architecture cases in New York and São Paulo. In this way, it is presented what sort of design strategies global patterns such as LEED® are promoting and what type of urban and architectural space is being produced.
