ABSTRACT

A sensible woman, in choosing her dress, takes account of the present fashions, but does not let them tyrannise over her. To her they are not ruling fashions, but only samples of style in dress, from which she makes her selection of the style that suits her individual purpose. ‘The fashions’ come from the teeming brains of those whose business it is to invent other people’s clothes. No dress can be, under any circumstances, either beautiful, convenient, or healthy, which does not allow the utmost freedom of movement that is suited to the circumstances. Jackets fitting, but boneless, with shirts or loose silk fronts, have long been popular; and sensible women should band themselves together to ‘keep in’ permanently so wise and delightful a fashion.
