ABSTRACT

One of the ever-increasing army of ‘strong-minded’ women ardently loves beautiful expression, whether in form or in colour, to say a word or two on the matter of dress. Dr. Benjamin Ward Richardson, of ‘Hygieia’ fame, depicts the beatified inhabitants of that sanitorial Salem as superior to the consideration of sexual distinctions in the matter of dress. Hygieian men and women dress alike, save for the addition of a coloured sash about the middle in the case of the fairer half of the population. But in the question of dress, as in every other human question, the watchword of the true and competent reformer should be – Freedom. Human dress is, or should be, to the wearer what plumage is to the bird, and foliage to the tree. The common people laugh when they see a dress that is not ‘in the fashion’.
