ABSTRACT

The trend goes on, as witness the recent inter-departmental workshop at the University of Nevada/Reno, where attention was given to defining the future role of that institution in relation to continuing education, including community development. "Urban Studies" and "Urban Affairs" centers are appearing on campuses all over the country. Community colleges are entering the field of community development. The National Council on Community Services for Community and Junior Colleges has just emerged as a product of the Community Services Project of the American Association of Junior Colleges. In the case of community development, conceptualization is admittedly a major undertaking. The role of community development is vital in connection with this trend. It is inherent in the oft-disregarded maxim that a new organization, no matter how perfectly structured, can easily come to naught if the motivation, understanding, and skills to make it functional are lacking.
