ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 covers aspects of offender activity known as grooming. Grooming efforts are common activities that involve the offender preparing the victim to be victimized and are an intentional activity that occurs with all ages and sexes of victims. The purpose is to develop a compliant victim who can be victimized on multiple occasions. This activity is designed to isolate the victim, and through the chameleon effect, the offender becomes what the victim is seeking or missing in their lives. There are also efforts to portray themselves as a caring and concerned person to others as a part of environmental grooming which they use to gain more access to younger victims or to convince others that they could not possibly be a sex offender.
