ABSTRACT

Employers’ organizations have increased in importance over recent decades. They represent employers of different sizes, and different sectors, to the most powerful international governmental organizations. The nature of international employers’ organizations is that they seek to defend the general, bottom-line interests of employers operating across borders. Thus, in examining their views, we can distil the essential ideas of employers on a range of topics at any one time. This chapter examines the views of two of the most important international employers’ organizations, the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD and the International Organisation of Employers. Whilst the key arguments of businesses centre on economics and the needs of for-profit organizations, this chapter detects some variability and distinctiveness between them based on whether they focus on business in general or on the specific challenges confronted by employers.
