ABSTRACT

Revolutions in the Eastern European countries and dramatic political events which culminated with the treaty signed in Belorussia by the leaders of three republics and shortly transformed in the new version of the Commonwealth created by the 11 republics have made the Soviet Union a fact of history and have seriously changed the military-strategic landscape in Europe and worldwide. The risks and challenges towards the security and stability of the Central European countries represent an integral part and logical consequence of those processes which are going on across the whole of Europe. Unfortunately the threats towards the Central Europe’s security and stability arising from the internal developments in the former Soviet Union have to be distinguished as the most probable and serious. The establishment of the new Commonwealth which united 11 former Soviet republics has created some hopes but did not liquidate concerns about future development.
