ABSTRACT

Experiencing stress in the workplace (occupational stress) is normal; indeed stress can be a positive thing, leading to increased arousal, helping the reader to be prepared and nervous about an event or situation. Recent studies claim that over 75% of teachers in England reported to have suffered stress because of their jobs, citing anxiety, depression and panic attacks amongst some of the side effects. There were a number of additional comments made by the head-teachers about stress which provide more context to the data collected. Not only is policy shift a challenge, but in more recent times the emergence of COVID-19 has completely transformed the role of headteachers, who are temporarily dealing with managing health and safety of school sites on levels never experienced before.
