ABSTRACT

Early in the author teaching career he realized that the most important and stressful week, day and lesson of the year was the ‘performance management observation.’ All the information was available in the school system, but bringing it together was difficult; what was needed was a central format where quality assurance and appraisal evidence could be easily accessed at the touch of a button. The biggest impact was on the accessibility and credibility of evidence for quality assurance and appraisal, but more important for the author was the improvement in teaching and learning and the increase in pupil outcomes. If there is explicit evidence that performance can be improved at individual or faculty level, then the appraisal process should be linked and used to address those issues. An unexpected consequence of the system has been its link to classroom management.
