ABSTRACT

School exclusions across the United Kingdom continue to be a subject of debate in the media and the focus of government policy. In this chapter, the author explores the views of two brothers Danny and Jamie on the behavioural sanctions of internal and external school exclusion they experienced. He includes the views of their mother (Sharon) as well as an assistant principal who has oversight of behaviour and welfare at the 11-16 school where the boys attend. Frequent disruptive behaviours will impact negatively on the learning of all pupils, so exclusion introduces a 'moral dilemma' for schools and senior leaders. School leaders would not wish pupils and their families to be resistant to their behaviour ethos; in fact, the ethos permeates the shared vision for all stakeholders with the aim of all pupils succeeding in every aspect of their schooling life.
