ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces readers to current concepts and practices at the intersections of public health, mental health, and mass atrocity prevention. The purpose of the chapter is to improve health outcomes and to avert future atrocity crimes by fostering individual and societal healing. Moreover, atrocity prevention frames must consider additional tools and expertise to complement legal institutions and systems for accountability and justice toward lasting peace and deterrence of future atrocity crimes perpetration. Moreover, ending policies and practices that traumatize parents and children, while disrupting family and social cohesion, should be prioritized. In a world in which cascading crises converge to challenge even the most stable societies, effective atrocity prevention strategies must be further tested, adapted, and refined collaboratively across professional siloes and policymaking institutions. This chapter serves as the starting point for conversations and collaborations to blaze that trail forward.
