ABSTRACT

When creating a syllabus for an undergraduate survey course on Latin American Literature in English translation, the question of availability proves inevitable: what texts have been translated into English? And equally important: what has not been translated and what does that mean? These questions provide a productive opportunity to integrate a discussion on translation as a mode of circulation into a literature class. The aim of the class is twofold: to foster critical reading practices that address the specific ontological status of translated texts and reveal translations as such while foregrounding the possibility of different readings when translations are considered new originals. Such a reading can also frame these as new works in the recipient target culture, where they constitute a Latin American literature, one version of it created in English and constructed for an English-speaking audience. The chapter also includes useful strategies for building a comprehensive and inclusive syllabus using alternative platforms to find new available translations and ideas for in-class activities to render the translation scene visible.
