ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to trace the journey of a Bengali woman from a middle-class background through various periods of turmoil – post-Partition refugee influx, movements for food in the late 50s, communal riots in 1964, Naxalbari upsurge in the late 60s, the Bangladesh liberation struggle of the early 70s and so on. Each one of these had an enormous impact in shaping her personality. Besides, her upbringing by politically and socially conscious parents who carried the legacy of our freedom struggle and the interaction of their intellectual and activist friends helped her to imbibe a spirit of social awareness which eventually turned her into an agent for social change and transformation. The imprint of her childhood, adolescence and youth made her pursue the search for her own identity as a committed educationist, social activist and, above all, concerned citizen.
