ABSTRACT

The experience of COVID-19, along with climate change, requires new thinking about the human predicament, which was described decades go by Geoffrey Warnock in The Object of Morality. In light of such contemporary challenges, and others such as AI, there are questions about how to make things go better for human beings, perhaps by enhancing humans themselves. How should this be interpreted? The concept of enhancement is not straightforward. We cannot simply assume, for example, that greater moral capacity (understood, perhaps, as more empathy) would constitute an improvement overall. Analysis of the concept of enhancement and the criteria of success is required.
