ABSTRACT

In some respects the pandemic crisis is traditional and has elicited traditional responses. In others it foreshadows wider ecological catastrophe. In both cases we need to see that capitalism and state power alike achieve control by increasing scarcity and economising risk. What drives both, but is unseen by secularism, is liberalism linked to materialism. In consequence, both life as such and spiritual life need defending. This further involves achieving a balance between the guidance exercised by human agents and multiple other natural agents. The metaphysics of participation in Creation and the Trinity can help secure this.
