ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the importance of Siachen glacier for Indian defence has been examined. It has been argued at length that the objective of Pakistan’s 1999 Kargil misadventure was to cut off Ladakh from rest of India and thereby force withdrawal of the Indian Army from the Saltoro ridge which sits astride the Siachen glacier. The chapter also provides a critique against the voices for demilitarization being espoused by a section of South Asian intelligentsia.
