ABSTRACT

Naropa (956 A.D.-1050 A.D.) is credited with introducing Sadanga Yoga in Buddhism. Many believe that he brought the Kalacakra Tantra, the synthesis of different world-views prevalent among Hindu-Buddhist practitioners to Nalanda. Born in the small kingdom of Bengal, Naropa succeeded in obtaining the chancellorship of famed Nalanda University. Naropa’s accomplished disciple was Marpa, the translator, who succeeded Naropa in the lineage and brought the teachings and transmissions in their entirety to Tibet. There are innumerable holy pilgrimage sites in Kashmir and Zanskar, related to Naropa and his spiritual heirs. The chapter describes many of these sites spread across the Himalayas from Ladakh, Lahul-Spiti, Kinnaur to Bhutan.
