ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic presented the sport industry with unique and unprecedented dilemmas, including the high-stakes decisions faced by the national leaders of the Olympic movement around the world. The leadership of Peru’s Olympic administrative structures were faced with choices related to travel logistics, finances, and governance, similar to those faced by other national Olympic decision-makers. This chapter examines the information that influenced decision-making in the Peruvian Olympic sport context in early 2020. The research finds that in the face of unprecedented events and absence of any reliable evidence, managerial decision-making took place at the intersection of practitioner expertise, local context and circumstances, external evidence, and stakeholders. In this way, the in-depth single-case analysis of Team Peru’s decision-making emphasizes management judgement and context, and provides a unique perspective on evidence-based management during the Covid-19 pandemic.
