ABSTRACT

The outbreak of Covid-19 has roused various changes in the realm of professional sport. Leagues across the globe have announced delay or cancellation of their schedule to effectively protect the stakeholders from the threat of the pandemic. This vacuum left by the absence of football propels active fans to modify their ways of participation in football as they can no longer pursue the traditional ways of being engaged in the football community. In order to remedy the absence of face-to-face interaction on matchdays, football fan clubs are exuding traits that require our attention. There is an observable increase in the usage of online communication within fan communities during the pandemic, which brings forth conditions for certain forms of civic engagement to be established and their outcomes to be materialized. This chapter focuses on understanding such civic traits that reside within the augmented use of online communication in football fan clubs.
