ABSTRACT

Apex House was the tallest modular building in Europe when completed in August 2017 at 28 storeys of self-supporting modules ground, and an additional basement storey, also partially modular totalling 29 storeys of modular construction. Apex House, also known as Scape Wembley, houses 558 student rooms and extensive additional amenities, creating a local landmark signposting the corner of Fulton Road and Albion Way. The Vision Modular Systems factory originated in Ireland but moved to the United Kingdom in 2009 after the financial crash of 2008 and restarted module production with the Schubette House project adjacent to this building which completed in 2011. The use of offsite prefabrication meant that the building could be constructed by closing one lane of the adjacent side streets for the 12-month construction period. The building has been constructed to meet the BREEAM Standard and includes a communal heating system powered by a gas-fired Combined Heat and Power plant.
