ABSTRACT

In the absence of any bold new political vision, it is left to a small but influential group of clients, manufacturers and architects, to show the benefits of factory made housing, and modular housing in particular, through a growing number of completed developments. The architecture expresses a connection of the homes to their natural setting with a large veranda combining with mono-pitch roofs which tilt upwards to maximise the southerly aspect of the homes and brings light into their living spaces. Many consider the homes built in the first United Kingdom housing boom that finished a little over a century ago to be amongst the best examples of mass housing across the world. Housing need was driven by a dramatic growth in population coupled with the need to continue slum clearance and to replace the homes destroyed by war, which together provided a very straightforward narrative and widely accepted political imperative.
