ABSTRACT

Architects keen to participate in international work on modular projects will need to ensure that they have a solid grasp of the technical basis for designing volumetric buildings and have a coherent design for manufacture and assembly approach and skilled staff to carry out the work. In 2017 the Building and Construction Authority announced a major drive to promote the use of offsite construction. The Hong Kong Government is a major housing provider and construction costs are among the highest in the world. In common with other Scandinavian countries, Sweden has embraced prefabrication for many decades as a way of construction which can be continued throughout their difficult winter. Local economics such as the shortage of land in dense cities like Hong Kong and Singapore are driving demand, as well as construction costs and the availability of labour in London and New York.
