ABSTRACT

The concept of identity has a complex and difficult explanation, even more so when linked to the theme of migration. Identity is a continuous search for balance and stability between different values, rules, and messages, which, however, originate from a common and shared foundation, which is that of the culture. In the case of immigrants, establishing borders of one’s identity becomes much more complex as it is a process of reconciliation between two value systems and cultural beliefs in a precarious balancing act. This produces that phenomenon defined as acculturation stress which can manifest with behavioural symptoms which can have negative consequences for both self-esteem and level of satisfaction with one’s life, thereby creating barriers. The challenge of integration can be played out in the context of the redefinition of family boundaries by implementing social policies of support and intervention for parents when the entire value and behavioural system of origin is in crisis.
