ABSTRACT

Asylum seekers, refugees, forced migrants, and economic irregular migrants are definitions that technically differ but stand for the same conditions: displaced persons in motion that arrive traumatized in Europe in search of a better life, and remain traumatized during all of the procedures for regularization or expulsion. Music is a powerful tool not only to model a new understanding of a transnational cultural identity, but also to creatively intervene in the creation of public opinion about cultural, ethnic and religious diversity that more and more characterize the Italian ethnoscape. In Italy illegal entry is permitted only if there are the conditions for obtaining the status of refugee, a residence permit for subsidiary protection or a residence permit for humanitarian reasons. In Zerbione none of the asylum seekers is a musician. Elisa Tartaglia started a workshop with the help of cultural-linguistic mediators.
