ABSTRACT

Woman was the first slave even before slaves existed. She faced “the historical defeat” when man started making his own tools and used them for not only satisfying hunger but also for prosperity. The days of food gathering and agriculture by hand were gone and came the end of matriarchy. Whereas the Bolshevik Revolution set women free, Stalinism led to a drastic reversal of policy on women and the family. Many of the gains made by the revolution were abolished. Abortions were made illegal and divorce was made increasingly difficult till it became an expensive court procedure. With the electronic revolution, the mode of production has undergone a further transition, and made it easier for women to play a significant role in the process. The basic position of Marxism on the biology versus environment debate is that biology obviously plays a role in enabling and restricting what humans can do.
