ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the identity formation on the basis of language in both Indian sub-continents and Canada. Language itself is part of identity construction (both individual and collective) and has been widely documented in sociolinguistics researches. Urdu as a language is used for identity formation and its retention. However, it is being questioned and challenged by various actors in their articulation of interests in pursuit of power. “Urdu is a major language of South Asia, and it has been gaining in popularity since the independence of the Indian sub-continent.” “The British introduce both representative and democratic institutions first at the local level and then at the provincial level, as well as the principles of competition based on merit in the areas of education and jobs.
