ABSTRACT
This chapter illustrates the domestic political constraints – in addition to the external structural pressures – facing South Korean leaders in formulating their Great Power strategies. It shows that political leaders in South Korea must carefully navigate a “socially shared discourse” which “are themselves embedded within a historical and cultural context” when discussing foreign policy agendas—in particular, alliance management issues.
