ABSTRACT

Spirituality and religion play an important role in the lives of those who identify as Hindu and can be a significant source of support during recovery from substance use. Hinduism is the oldest practiced religion in the world and does not have one core doctrine. Rather, it is about morals, ethics, and a way of life. Most Hindus are vegetarian and abstain from alcohol and drugs, and use of substances may bring shame and guilt to the family and could cause further anxiety, depression, or feelings of isolation. Because factors such as acculturation, migration, and social status can shape drinking behavior, it is important for the counselor to examine the client’s level of acculturation and how they view recovery as a dimension of their spirituality.
