ABSTRACT

Substance abuse is one of the most important problems threatening not only Western societies but also Muslim populations. Especially for Muslims, this problem is a situation that needs to be paid even more attention in Western countries where they live as a minority. Hence, mental health professionals need to take into account their culture-specific dynamics and protective factors in addition to universal intervention methods when working with clients with substance abuse from the Muslim culture and their families. This chapter provides an overview of the demographic structure of Muslims, the prevalence of substance abuse among them, the risks and protective factors affecting substance abuse, recovery from substance abuse in Muslim populations, and what mental health professionals need to consider when working with clients of Muslim origin who are substance abusers.
