ABSTRACT

Entering treatment for a substance use disorder means addressing the biopsychosocial aspects of addiction. One aspect often ignored is the impact of grief and loss on recovery. Through the use of structured activities, clients can increase their awareness of losses related to substance use. Through grieving these losses, the emotional impact of unresolved grief can be addressed. This chapter provides an overview of activities that can be used as part of the treatment protocol. Counselors can adapt these activities for use with individuals or with groups where clients are dealing recovery from substance use.
