ABSTRACT

To be effective in working with grief issues, counselors need to be aware of their personal losses and any unresolved feelings of loss. Research has shown that therapists who are experiencing their own grief risk avoiding grief issues with their clients. Increasing awareness of one’s grief and loss issues is a first step in becoming effective in working with client’s grief issues. This chapter explores the impact of grief on counselors who work with grief issues and examines the role of supervision and self-exploration on understanding how grief affects clinical practice.
