ABSTRACT

Women often enter treatment for substance use disorders with a history of trauma, thus complicating recovery efforts. Because of the metabolic difference, females reach a greater level of intoxication in relation to males when ingesting the same amount of alcohol. Even though women begin use of substances at a later age then men, they more rapidly progress to problems with substances and then rapidly move from problems to treatment seeking. Grief may also be approached differently, and although there is no one right way to grieve, women may be more openly expressive of emotions and therefore may need different treatment approaches compared to men.
