ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to understand the visitor’s experience of narrative in connection with moments of everyday life at an exhibition, in order to better inform the design and development of narrative in the making of museum exhibitions. Acknowledging a difference between narrative as it informs the design phase of a project and the narrative that is experienced by the visitor in the completed exhibition, the chapter draws on narrative theory and theories of interpretation in order to better understand how visitors interpret exhibition narratives. Visitor research carried out at Vischering Castle, a heritage site and museum experience included tracking the movement, timing, and conversations of visitors with a wearable camera, followed by structured interviews with visitors after their visit. Through the analysis of recorded material and diagrammatic representations of each visit, insights into the diverse visitor experiences were evaluated.
