ABSTRACT

Music-making and learning for Deaf young people has often been viewed as therapy, and as a result, Deaf young people have been excluded from everyday music learning and music-making. This chapter explores the attitudes, adaptations and acceptance needed by music teachers to make learning accessible to young people who are Deaf. Working with Deaf and hearing music leaders, the research documents teaching strategies which enable Deaf young people to learn the fundamentals of pulse, rhythm, and pitch as a starting point for a musically active life with confidence. It aims to give hearing teachers and musicians ideas for supporting Deaf and hearing impaired young people’s musical development.
