ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the scope of the book as well as its academic and intellectual origins. It traces dominant historical discourses (from theology to biology to psychology) about the penis, noting a trajectory to present day gender, cultural, and trans studies. It situates the arguments that the book attends to and notes the socio-cultural and scholarly contributions that each chapter makes. It highlights shared concerns and aims among chapters as well as flagging points of debate between them.
