ABSTRACT

Virtual cases (VCs) is a simulation technique initially developed for medical education to allow students to “encounter” more patient cases than are available in the normal curriculum. Today, many other domains like teacher education, law, social work and psychology have started to investigate the possibility of using VCs due to their potential of, e.g. improving learner engagement and learning outcomes. This chapter discusses the development of virtual cases, design issues of VCs, how to integrate VCs into the curriculum, show educational benefits as well as challenges, plus discuss the possibility to use VCs for assessment and self-evaluation. The chapter ends with a suggestion of design and implementation guidelines.
