ABSTRACT

The chapter investigates the complex world of mixed-methods research. As discussed in other chapters, understanding the world draws on multiple paradigms. From a social science perspective, theories are applied, data are collected, and numbers are tested. Interpretive scholars seek to understand through the stories and experiences of others using interviews and by observing people and surroundings. Critical scholars interpret a variety of texts to build arguments about the ways people persuade, influence, and use their power and privilege. Each paradigm offers a lens through which we can understand the world. But each are limited to only explaining one piece of communication. By mixing paradigms and methods, a researcher can gain a better understanding of the complex communication issues. Seeking to research a wide range of communication issues, social scientists are combining methods. Combining approaches provides a better understanding of communication than using just one approach. The chapter goes into detail on planning a mixed methods study by considering if the plan for the study is convergent parallel, explanatory sequential, or exploratory sequential.
