ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews an approach and methodology for analysis that emphasizes the landscape and public realm as the deepest, most permanent aspects of the built environment. It draws from the traditions of landscape architecture, urban morphology, urban planning and urban design, focusing attention on quantitative and qualitative aspects of physical form, and is a synthesis of methods developed and utilized over 20 years of teaching, research and practice. The methodology can be applied to different scales, contexts and degrees of community involvement, with the intention of leading to a better understanding of places and more appropriate and sustainable design.
