ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how urban agriculture at various scales is being integrated into the fabric of many cities around the globe and why that trend is something to be welcomed and encouraged. Urban food production takes place in varied locations and is undertaken by individuals in small-scale noncommercial operations, in larger-scale commercial operations, and in hybrid models that combine the two. Promoted for its capacity to deliver multiple benefits, urban agriculture supplies locally grown food, improves human and environmental health, enhances city livability and amenity and, potentially, connects people to places and to each other.
