ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the present structures for governance of emigration today and briefly traces its evolution from colonial times. The implementation of the Emigration Act 1983 is discussed, and also the recent trends of emigration from Indian states. There is a focus on the challenges posed to women’s emigration and also the dichotomy between the movement of skilled and unskilled people. The problems faced by Indian workers going overseas and the latest measures adopted by the government of India to protect them are highlighted.
