ABSTRACT

International migration is a dynamic and focal factor in the development of Kerala. The demand for unskilled, semi-skilled and other kinds of labourers for different developmental and infrastructural activities increased the flow of Keralites. The trend of return migration increased substantially in the last decade due to various reasons such as the localisation of jobs, low wages and poor working conditions, compulsory expatriation and change in the policies of destination countries. The pattern of return migration, occupational mobility, living and working conditions, and socio-economic issues of return migrants are different from one part to another of Kerala. The overall objective of the study is to understand the trends, patterns of return migration and their reintegration in the Malabar region of Kerala. The study will use data from the Kerala Migration Survey 2018. Apart from this, qualitative data collected among return migrants will also be analysed.
