ABSTRACT

This article discusses one way third spaces are created through the process of acculturation. This is a psychological process studied in the field of cross-cultural psychology to understand the interaction of cultures. The article will go through the acculturation processes, separation, marginalisation, integration, and assimilation with real-life examples. The journey of the development of the third space will be discussed from a one-dimensional model, going through the two-dimensional model to arrive at the fusion model which is where the third space is formulated. The purpose of this article is to show the impact of experiences in academia that influence third spaces. This article highlights and promotes the third space potentially being a healthy space for individuals who are influenced by two or more cultures and need to navigate a predominantly White academia.
