ABSTRACT

This essay explores the widely employed Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment (EPIS) framework. First, the essay describes the four-phase process of implementation (i.e., Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment). Next, it introduces the concept of implementation factors as determinants and mechanisms and the framework’s delineation of implementation factors into those associated with the innovation being implemented, the inner context and outer context, bridging factors between the inner and outer context, and linkages within the inner or outer contexts. The use of the EPIS framework to inform implementation strategies and evaluation follows, and finally the essay concludes with key features for applying EPIS in research and practice.
