ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the continuing demands on MNEs to transfer knowledge and experience, to identify pivotal positions and a pool of candidates to fill them, and to implement differentiated HR practices to ensure that talent to fill international roles is available when needed. The authors consider some of the growing challenges for expatriates, short-term assignees, international business travelers, and those on rotational assignments, coupled with the rise of digital nomads, including health and safety concerns and flexible global working arrangements. As the ability and need for colocation decreases, the succeeding section considers how technology enables MNEs to leverage the impact of global virtual workforces, followed by a discussion of some key management challenges in virtual global teams. The chapter concludes with a section on lessons learned during the pandemic about managing remote workers, minimizing health risks, and providing organizational support, along with a brief discussion of emerging research questions.
