ABSTRACT

The purpose of this essay is to identify Meyerhold’s work as a complex and multi-layered source of theoretical and practical stimuli, which produces significant effects in one of the most expressive theatre groups in contemporary Brazilian scene, PERFORMA TEATRO. The main idea is to demonstrate how the group’s artistic and research activities exemplify the potential of a present day Meyerholdian aesthetics, standing out for its experimentation in the field of performative theatre and performance. The elements of the Meyerholdian actor’s art are evident in the PERFORMA’s productions, whose theoretical concepts are presented here by the words of Matteo Bonfitto, actor, researcher and artistic director of PERFORMA who founded the group in 2000. The PERFORMA TEATRO’s case-study discussed in the essay allows us to perceive Meyerholdian influence not only on PERFORMA’s productions, but also on other references related to contemporary Brazilian theatre.
