ABSTRACT

This chapter, written by the third author, brings readers into Salvador Minuchin’s living room, where they are able to sit with him and listen to his sage advice. Practitioners will learn how to make sense of who they are and how they can develop and trust their own therapeutic voice. The chapter will help build confidence in new therapists who often question their fit in the therapeutic environment and challenge the knowing of the more seasoned practitioner in ways that help remind them to be more curious and malleable. The chapter will highlight useful tips that enrich the self of the therapist, and it invites the reader to activate their most important tool—their own self. The chapter focuses on important concepts such as person of the therapist, utilization of self in therapy, and implications of being a mindful therapist.
