ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an opportunity for the reader to bring together the various components of the Family Therapist Pouch that have been described in previous chapters. Special emphasis is placed on the four main components of family therapy presented earlier in the book: deconstructing the symptom, unwrapping relational identities, exploring subsystems, and the use of the self of the therapist. In this chapter, the authors present an in-depth transcript of a case of Dr. Minuchin’s with a family, providing occasional commentary on how he utilized various tools within the Family Therapist Pouch. Further, the authors provide space for the reader to begin to analyze the session and to develop the skills of understanding which tools are used, when they are used, and how the therapist utilizes themselves to help to promote change in the family.
