ABSTRACT

New family therapists sometimes are reticent to challenge a family system’s current belief system. This leads to the maintenance of viewpoints and behaviors that keep the system restrained and unmoving toward change. This chapter provides an opportunity for the reader to think about the purposes of the questions they ask and to become self-reflective on their position in the therapeutic process. Utilizing actual supervisory transcript between Dr. Minuchin and a family therapist trainee (as well as the co-authors), the reader is brought into a supervision group led by one of the most influential family therapists. Commentary by the authors helps to explicate how the supervisor challenges the supervisee to explore their own certainties and develop new competencies in their role as a family therapist.
