ABSTRACT

Hospitals are ground zero. Hospital social workers historically have modified work priorities to meet urgent need, however, there is limited research on their practice during pandemics. An exploratory study was conducted in Ontario, Canada during COVID-19's second wave exploring role changes, accessible resource availability required for new duties, emergent training needs and recommendations for pandemic social work practice in hospitals. A range of adaptations to practice accommodating the increased and changing needs of patients, families and their colleagues was revealed. Given the likelihood of future pandemics, recommendations for much needed guidelines for hospital social work during a pandemic are discussed.
