ABSTRACT

A critical aspect of the limitation of naval armaments is the problem of naval tactical nuclear weapons (NTNW). The importance of this problem is determined by the destabilizing role of these weapons. The fact that the super powers possess large arsenals of NTNWs that amount to some thousands of nuclear munitions of various types and for various purposes, opens the way to the circumvention of existing agreements on the reduction of nuclear arms. Only the NTNW of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the US have been studied, since these two powers possess the largest stockpiles of the weapons; those of the other nuclear powers have been left out of the following consideration. A number of publications by foreign authors have been devoted to the functional purpose of NTNW. The elimination process of NTNW should be based on firm undertakings on the part of the highest leadership of the sides.
